Cat Friendly Clinic

We understand that there are unique difficulties in bringing a cat to a veterinary clinic:

  • Cats often do not travel well and feel unsafe away from their home
  • They are highly sensitive to new sights, sounds and smells
  • Most cats prefer quiet and solitude and are highly susceptible to stress
  • Most cats are highly stressed by nearby dogs in a vet clinic
  • Cats need to be handled gently and with respect in the clinic

Werrington Vets is accredited as a Gold LevelCat Friendly Clinic” as awarded by International Cat Care, part of the International Society of Feline Medicine. This is a rigorous accreditation scheme designed to demonstrate that certified clinics:

  • Understand the unique needs of cats and have made veterinary visits more cat-friendly.
  • Understand how to approach and handle cats in a gentle, empathetic and caring manner.
  • Have good standards of equipment, needed to investigate and treat feline diseases.
  • Have a good standard of facilities and care for hospitalised cats.

Achieving the Cat Friendly Clinic accreditation involves all staff, from receptionists and nurses, through to vets. We have worked hard to achieve this status. All our clinical areas (hospital wards, theatres and consultation rooms) are designed to minimise stress for our feline patients.

Here at Werrington Vets we have:

A cat friendly waiting room

This area is completely separate to the dog waiting area (no line of sight between the two areas) with raised areas for you to place your cats basket as they feel safer being off the floor, pheromone infused clean carrier covers and pheromone diffusers.

A separate consult room used only for cats

No more dog smells!!! Also, the pheromone diffuser, clean litter tray as well as scratch mats and the shelves will provide everything your cat needs to remain stress-free.

A separate cat ward for hospitalised patients.

Our cat ward includes a small examination area so cats do not have to exit the ward every time they need to be examined (usually they need to be moved to the prep room for this purpose). This is a safe and fear-free way to examine our hospitalised cats as they never come in contact with dogs or a lot of noise.

A cat advocate

Our head nurse Sam ensures the cat friendly standards are adhered to, and would be happy to talk to you about anything regarding your cat.
